The CA Brumbies are getting behind Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month during February.
Members of the side have donned teal ribbons to help raise awareness of ovarian cancer ahead of Teal Ribbon Day on Wednesday, 24 February.
Ovarian Cancer Australia is a not-for-profit national organisation that provides support and advocacy for people affected by ovarian cancer, and is the peak body for ovarian cancer awareness and prevention in Australia. RUPA members are keen to get the message to the community that the disease does not just impact on women and it is important men are educated on the support available.
CA Brumbies flyhalf Matt Toomua has encouraged the public to get behind the awareness initiative.
"We're very pleased to be supporting the fight against ovarian cancer," he said. "We get behind a lot of great causes during the year and all the boys were very quick to pin on a teal ribbon and lend their support to a great cause.
"While there is not currently a test for ovarian cancer, the treatment success rate is very high if it's diagnosed early.
"We just want women to be aware of ovarian cancer and be aware of the symptoms to try and reduce the number of deaths caused by this disease."
By purchasing a teal ribbon and wearing it throughout February, and especially on Teal Ribbon Day on Wednesday week, you will help raise awareness of ovarian cancer.
Throughout the world teal is recognised as the international colour for ovarian cancer.
The Rugby Union Players' Association (RUPA) has worked with Ovarian Cancer Australia since 2008
President of the RUPA, Adam Freier, said he pleased to see players in the code getting behind a good cause.
"Every year in Australia around 1500 women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer and more than 850 women will die from the disease – that’s like 100 rugby teams taking the field and losing nearly nine players in every team," he said.
"Ovarian cancer can and will have an impact on everyone - it could be your wife, girlfriend, sister, gran or aunt.
"All professional Rugby Union players in Australia are proud to support Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month."
