Berrick Barnes

Berrick congratulations on your selection in the Wallabie's World Cup squad to tour France in a few weeks. 21 years of age, what were you doing when you received the call?

I was having a quiet drink and listening to the Holy Grail with some mates when the call came thru.

The Holy Grail by the Hunters and Collectors?

That's the one.

Fantastic! Given you are only 21, are there guys still playing for the Wallabies that you looked up to as a kid and thought you may one day like to follow?

Obviously a lot of the senior players who are there, the likes of Steve Larkham, I always looked up to him, coming thru as a five eighth. Also Latho, I admire the way he has come back especially after his knee injury and his passion for Queensland. Being a Queenslander myself it's always been a big thing so to be able to hopefully play with him, that would be great.

You were recruited from Rugby League as a teenager and now at a very young age the rewards seem to be paying off. When you decided to make the switch, was the prospect of playing for the Wallabies something that influenced you?

Obviously everyone wants to play for their country if they can. It wasn't the big motivator for me to come across. I really wanted to try Union again, I had played at school and wanted the opportunity to travel and play sport in different countries against the best opposition around the world. At the moment I have been able to do that. I have been pretty fortunate and obviously being selected in this team I am pretty lucky to be able to do it.

Originally from Kingaroy, will the Red Ants be doing anything special in your honour over the World Cup?

I grew up on League out there and I had a few calls this week form some old mates and the local paper which was really good. Kingaroy was great for me. The kids in the country are lucky in some ways in that they often have a footy in their hands rather than a computer game. I was pretty fortunate to grow up there.

Your old school mate and current Reds team mate Nick Berry will be over in France around the same time as you, have you got any other friends or family heading over?

It will be great to be able to catch up with Bezza over there. He's going over to play with the Racing Club in Paris, on e of the oldest French clubs. I wish him all the best. We're having a Bbq for him beofre he goes and it will be great to catch him over there for sure.  I have some close mates camper vanning thru France for the World Cup, so if I can catch them along the way that would be great. So, yeah there should be a bit of support over there.

What are your thoughts on bringing the Cup back to Australia and the team confidence at present?

There seems to be a lot more confidence after the All Blacks game and the win in Melbourne. I think if we can keep that sort of confidence and get thru all the pool games it can be anyone's game. i know it's pretty cliched but once you get to those quarter finals and semis, it's who ever rocks on the day.
